Both are GFSI-recognized. The real difference is where your product goes and what else the buyer wants assessed.
Both schemes are benchmarked against GFSI, so on food safety credibility they stand on similar ground. The choice is usually made by market.
GLOBALG.A.P. IFA is the default expectation for European retail and for many multinational buyers operating internationally. PrimusGFS is the more common ask across North and Central American produce supply chains.
The second factor is breadth. GLOBALG.A.P. reaches beyond food safety into environmental practice and, through its social add-on, worker welfare. If a buyer's sustainability programme is driving the request rather than their food safety team, that usually points to GLOBALG.A.P.

European retail almost always means GLOBALG.A.P. North American retail and foodservice more often means PrimusGFS or SQF.
PrimusGFS scopes by module against what your operation does. GLOBALG.A.P. works through control points across the whole production cycle.
GLOBALG.A.P. brings environmental requirements into the same audit. PrimusGFS stays on food safety.
If a buyer wants social practice assessed, GLOBALG.A.P.'s add-on module is the established route.
Both have broad certification body coverage, but availability near you differs by region — ask before choosing.
Terminology differs meaningfully. The underlying evidence does not.
Exporters sometimes end up holding both certificates because a domestic retailer names one and an export customer names the other. That is expensive in audit fees but much less expensive in preparation than it first appears.
Water testing, training records, sanitation, input records, harvest practice and traceability satisfy both. The duplicated work is in mapping evidence to two different structures and sitting two audits — not in generating two sets of records.
One table: recognition, scope, HACCP and who asks for each.
